The Event - Season 1, Episode 15 - Face Off

The Event - Face Off
Martinez and Sterling are forced to negotiate with Sophia she gives a graphic demonstration of her group's technology. Meanwhile, Sean and Vicky travel to France to seek out Dempsey.

Full Recap
Sean and Vicky run out of the Ambassador Hotel as the Vice-President's Secret service agents give chase. The two fugitives split up and Sean steals a van. He drives around, picks up Vicky, and they make good their escape. They pull off later to change out of their party garb, and Vicky insists that she's fulfilled her end of the bargain and they're done. Sean tells her that she's done when he says they're done, and warns her that if she walks away then he'll expose her son. Vicky begs him to let her go, but Sean says that she'll be free when they find Dempsey in France.

The military moves in on the church where Sophia, Thomas, and the sleepers have gathered. Leila emerges from hiding and watches the soldiers assemble outside, and then turns and sees Sophia.

In Washington, Sterling coordinates the assault as Lee arrives. The director explains that they located Sophia in Los Angeles, and that the President has sent in the military to end it once and for all. Sterling says that Lee has proved himself and that he'll need the agent's expertise. They enter the command center, where Martinez is coordinating the evacuation of citizens in the neighborhood. General Armbruster assures the President that they have secured the church and there's no escape, and Martinez says that they're done cowering.

In the church, Sophia receives a call from Martinez, who calls upon her and her people to surrender peacefully. She refuses to let him lock them up again, and he tells her that they have 10 minutes. Any resistance, and he'll make her regret coming to Earth.

With seven minutes remaining, Armbruster warns that the chances are good that Thomas will shoot, but he'll take the majority of the casualties. Sterling advises a cautious approach so that they can take prisoners, and Lee agrees. Martinez refuse to accept their advice.

As Thomas arms his people, Sophia tells him to have his people at the portal get them out. He refuses, saying it would give her control. She asks for his trust, but Thomas says that they can't contact Gerard, and by the time he contacts them it will be too late. As Michael reports on the forces against them, Leila finds him and he draws her off to the side. She apologizes for being there and wonders what is going to happen, and her father admits that he doesn't know.

Sophia calls Lee, who warns that Martinez won't negotiate. She tells him that their planet is going to be destroyed, and they can't surrender with the fate of their world at stake. Meanwhile, Gerard calls and Thomas explains the situation. He says that they can't teleport 188 people out unless they load the new uranium rods, and that will take hours. Sophia asks him what he can teleport out. A recon team starts to drill in the windows and Thomas' people open fire, taking down one soldier.

Martinez orders the assault to begin, and Sophia calls to say that the shooting wasn't supposed to happen. She tells him not to send in his men, but he hangs up and gives the order for the soldiers to begin the assault. Sophia looks at her people and then tells them to tell Gerard to take it down.

In Washington, the command center rumbles and Martinez realizes that Sophia is launching a strike of her own. Nearby, the Washington Monument collapses. The rumbling stops and Sterling gets a report of what has happened and tells Martinez the news. Martinez orders the soldiers to stand down before Sophia goes even further.

Martinez and his staff return to the command center and view the news broadcasts about the destruction. The President orders his staff to evacuate his wife and son, but refuses to leave. He then starts to dictate a speech about an attack by a terrorist group, but Sophia calls and asks for three buses and a cargo jet. If he doesn't grant her demands in one hour, she'll destroy Washington.

Sean and Vicky fly to France in a private jet that Vicky has procured via some favors. She asks him to let her talk to his son Adam and he sets up a link. Vicky talks to her mother, who says that Adam is asleep. Mrs. Larson tells them about the destruction of the Washington Monument, and asks Vicky to come home. After she cuts the connection, Sean checks the files and learns that Dempsey sponsors the Phoenix Foundation, and they have an archaeological dig in the Jura Mountains. He figures that Dempsey is looking for something and it's worth a fortune.

In France, Dempsey arrives and meets with the head archaeologist, Dr. Ellis. He shows his superior a dozen amphorae dating back two thousand years, but Dempsey says that they're far older. Ellis explains that one of them is inscribed with an unknown language. The chamber they removed them from has additional pictographs, but Dempsey angrily notes that no one was supposed to breach the entrance. Ellis assures him that he was the only one who entered the chamber, and Dempsey takes out a gun and shoots him dead.

In Los Angeles, Thomas notes to Sophia how hard it must have been for her, but she tells him not to try and pretend to understand her. She warns him that he eliminated diplomacy as a possibility, and Thomas insists that humans have always been hostile and self-centered throughout history. He admits he's made some mistakes but has united their people, but Sophia says he's only united them in fear. Thomas warns her that change isn't easy, and she says that leadership is never supposed to be easy. Sophia hugs him while Isabel looks on.

In Washington, Sterling asks to talk to Martinez alone. As he goes, Martinez tells his staff to give Sophia the busses because it's their only option. Outside, Sterling suggests that they have another option. He explains that he saw Thomas at Bethesda Hospital when Lee was recovering there. According to the footage, Thomas posed as a technician in the lab and switched Lee's DNA. They've been monitoring Lee's phone and determined that he's been making encrypted codes, and Sterling hopes to decipher them and finally get ahead of Sophia and the others.

Lee calls Sophia and objects to her actions, saying that she's turned away from their peaceful mission. Meanwhile, Sterling's technicians work to decipher the encrypted signal. On the phone, Sophia explains to Lee that they used up all of their fuel and right now she's bluffing.

In France, Vicky and Sean drive toward a safe house. He enters the code to keep her son's location from going out on the Internet, and then asks her for her contact's name. She explains that she knows the man as Henri, and that they worked together from time to time. Vicky refuses to tell him more, saying that it makes her vulnerable. They arrive at a villa and Vicky leaves Sean at the front gate while she goes around to the back. Henri captures Sean at gunpoint and prepares to shoot him, but Vicky arrives just in time.

Inside, Henry makes them a meal and talks about his past adventures with Vicky when she was a CIA agent. As Vicky goes to get some more wine, Henri explains that Vicky's CIA superior burned her to cover up his mistake and almost got her killed. He then asks Sean why Vicky is helping her, and Sean explains that he's blackmailing her. Henri admires him for that, but points out that Vicky doesn't do anything she doesn't want to do.

At the church, Michael comes to find Leila and tell her that they're getting out. She asks if they destroyed the monument and killed thousands, and wonders how her father could do it. Michael insists they had no choice, and Martinez would have locked them all up along with Leila. She insists that she isn't one of them, but Michael warns that Martinez won't make that distinction. He says that the humans are the monsters, and they'll always hunt them.

Dempsey and a lieutenant go to the chamber and examine the pictograms. They show guardian angels, and Dempsey explains that they are real creatures rather than metaphors. As he places his hand to the wall, Dempsey notices a triangular symbol. It matches a tattoo on his own wrist.

The three buses arrive at the church. Inside, Sophia speaks to her people and tells them to remain calm and controlled. She tells them to ignore the soldiers' guns and ignorance, and a new day is upon them. As the sleepers go to the buses, Isabel tells Thomas that he should be leading their people rather than Sophia, but he tells her that there are no sides anymore and orders her on the bus. Leila boards one of the other buses.

In Washington, the technician manages to decrypt the call between Lee and Sophia.

The buses leave for the airport, passing by the soldiers. Thomas confirms there's no pursuit to the rear.

The technician decrypts Sophia's statement that they're bluffing. Martinez orders his soldiers to take them out. Sterling objects, warning that the person with the portal is still out there and could launch more attacks. Martinez says that he's tried restraint but now they have to eliminate the threat by any means necessary.

An Apache helicopter closes in on the buses. Sophia and her people on the second bus spot the helicopter and she realizes that Martinez knows she's bluffing. The helicopter opens fire and blasts apart the lead bus. Thomas calls Gerard from the third bus and he confirms they have enough fuel to teleport one bus. Sophia calls to tell Thomas they have to surrender, but he tells her that she's the best chance to save their people. He explains that he'll run interference while Gerard sets the portal.

Martinez gets word that Sophia is on the second bus and tells his people to open fire.

Thomas has his driver pull his bus ahead of Sophia's. Sophia stares in horror as the missile strikes the bus, killing Thomas and the others. A portal opens on the road ahead and Sophia's bus enters it, disappearing.

The Event - Season 1, Episode 14 - A Message Back

The Event - A Message Back
Thomas receives a response from his people and summons Sophia and the sleepers to inform them of the news. Meanwhile, Sean forces Vicky to help him, Martinez deals with Vice President Jarvis' betrayal, and Dempsey continues his plans to acquire aliens for his own experimental purposes.

Full Recap
At a SETI monitoring station, the technicians pick up a concentrated signal and they realize it's a message. One worker prepares to notify the NSA, but the other one, Anthony, tells him to confirm first. When he confirms, his co-worker shoots him in the back. Anthony then calls Thomas and says that they received a message back. He gives it to Thomas and then wipes the data, and Thomas tells Isabel that something terrible has happened on their home planet.

Dempsey is at a playground watching the children when the matron comes to see him. He points out one girl and says that she's one of the special ones, and then says he'll be leaving and he wants the girl captured by the time he comes back. The matron assures him that they'll have the extract for him, and Dempsey says that he needs it so he can continue his work. As Dempsey looks on, the matron approaches the girl.

Vicky arrives home and Sean holds her at gunpoint and demands to know who she's working for. She warns that it's suicide, but Sean says that if she doesn't talk, he'll release the location of her son onto the Internet. Vicky caves and says that Dempsey is the one responsible, but he disappeared after she tried to take him out using the Vice President. She explains that Jarvis was part of the conspiracy, and Sean plans to go up against both of them and Vicky is going to help him.

President Martinez tells his staff that Thomas has the uranium rods, and from now on there can be no mistakes. Sterling tells him that they're waiting for Sophia to call so they can trace her, and Martinez has his general prepare troops in the field. When General Armbruster objects, warning that it's illegal to have military troops operating on American soil because of the Posse Comitatus Act, Martinez says that he knows the law and they should do what he says. Jarvis comes in and everyone applauds his return to duty after his recent injury.

Thomas watches as the plane leaves with the uranium rods.

In San Francisco, Michael and Sophia go to a safe house, and Sophia admits that Thomas played her, using her to get the uranium rods and discredit her with Martinez. Sophia's cell phone rings and she answers it. It's Thomas, who says that something important has happened. He says that he received a message back, and they can't afford to be divided any longer. Thomas insists that he has to explain in person, and he's going to meet with all the sleepers on both sides.

Martinez summons Jarvis to his office and asks why he's there. The Vice President wants to put things behind them to deal with the current crisis, and Martinez warns that he can make Jarvis' life miserable if he shows his face in the White House. Jarvis points out that nothing has happened on the record, and he's going to serve his country as he sees best. If the President tries to stop him, he'll reveal everything that Martinez has covered up. Martinez grabs him and warns him to stay out of his way. Before Jarvis can respond, Sterling arrives to summon them to the conference room. They've tracked the call to Sophia's phone and are sending in the soldiers. Martinez tells them to capture her alive... if they can.

As they drive to Washington, Sean realizes that Vicky knows about the aliens and Dempsey's experiments on young girls. Sean notes that she's done a lot of despicable things, but Vicky warns that he doesn't know her. She explains that her dad left her mom when she was a kid, and her stepfather beat Vicky's mother until Vicky found her stepfather's gun and shot him. Sean apologizes, and Vicky tells her that she made up the whole story. She admits that she is the way she is, and there's no deep reason to it.

Sterling comes to see Martinez in the Oval Office and admits that he's worried that Martinez is losing it, after he saw his treatment of Jarvis. He's also concerned about Martinez's decision to use the military, and Martinez explains that it's his fault that Sophia and her people escaped. If he needs to fix the mess they're in because of what he's done, he has to change. Martinez tells Sterling not to interrupt him against until he has new information on Sophia.

Vicky and Sean stop for coffee, and Sean checks his laptop. She asks what she's supposed to do when he gets himself killed and her family information is released. Sean tells her to figure out a way to keep her alive. He finds an article reporting that Jarvis is back at the White House, and attending a fundraiser at the Ambassador Hotel. Vicky suggests that he hack the guest list to get them in, and knows all about his past hacking history. She tells him to find people that already have been vetted.

In Washington, a married couple, the Fisks, are getting ready to go to the fundraiser. Vicky manages to get the husband, Ted, to open the door so she can use the phone, and Sean comes in and holds them at gunpoint. While Sean ties and gags them, Vicky returns with equipment to get their fingerprints and duplicate their IDs. She then prepares to shoot the couple, who can identify her. Sean stops her and pistol whips them unconscious.

Carlos Geller prepares to leave and discusses the situation with his wife, Diane. Leila overhears them talking, and listens as Carlos gets a text message telling him the address of the meeting.

As Sophia and Michael get the text, the soldiers close in on their safe house. Sophia figures that she needs to be there, confident that Thomas won't risk turning their people against him by killing her. As the soldiers move in, Martinez watches on their cameras. He starts to order them in, but Sterling informs him that Sophia has received a text message. As Sophia and Michael leave, Sterling and Martinez realize that Michael is one of the sleepers, and the message is a location for a mass meeting. He tells the soldiers to back off so they can follow and get all of the sleepers.

Sean and a blonde-wigged Vicky go through the security check at the hotel. Sean's fingerprint duplicate doesn't match the first time, but works the second time. Vicky then goes to the women's restroom and assembles a hidden ceramic gun, loading it with two bullets hidden in her metal lipstick. She then goes to the ballroom floor with Sean. Sean introduces himself to Jarvis using his fake ID, and then Vicky comes over. She warns him not to warn the Secret Service or she'll shoot him on the spot, and Sean tells the Vice President to play along and go with them for a minute alone.

In the hotel room, Ted wakes up, makes his way to the door, and kicks on it to get someone's attention.

Once they're alone, Sean tells Jarvis that he's going to help him take down Dempsey. Jarvis warns that Dempsey is threatening his wife and children if he talks, and he doesn't have actual proof. The Vice President insists that there's nothing they or anyone else can do.

The hotel maid hears Ted pounding on the door and releases him, and he tells her to call 911.

Vicky warns Sean that they don't have much time, and Sean takes the gun and puts it to Jarvis' head. He informs the Vice President that Dempsey has taken everything and everyone from him, and he has nothing to lose. Sean demands something to use against Dempsey, and Jarvis says that Dempsey has left for France, somewhere in the Jura Mountains.

The Secret Service agents get the 911 call and start looking for Jarvis. They knock on the door and Vicky and Sean get out just in time.

In Los Angeles, Sophia and Michael go to Union Station, seemingly unaware that they're being followed. The President and his staff watch as Sophia and Michael enter an abandoned cathedral that was bought six months ago by a developer. Carlos arrives and Thomas' lieutenant Devon greets him. Meanwhile, the NSA pick up 200 heat signatures inside, and Martinez orders the soldiers into position.

Inside the cathedral, Thomas tells Sophia that he's glad she and Michael came. She asks to speak to him privately, but Thomas says there'll be no more secrets. He calls the meeting to order.

Sterling shows Martinez photos from a closed-circuit camera across the street, confirming that Thomas is inside with the others.

As Thomas tells the gathered sleepers that his message has been answered, Leila watches from the back. Thomas tells them that their sun has started going supernova earlier than expected, and they have two weeks until all life on their planet is destroyed. His plan to bring a few thousand of their people to Earth is now obsolete. They have to bring their entire population through.

In front of the cathedral, Devon spots one of the soldiers. He goes inside and warns Thomas, while the soldiers close in. Thomas tells Sophia what is happening as the soldiers surround them.

The Event - Season 1, Episode 13 - Turnabout

The Event - Turnabout
Sterling and Richard rally to help President Martinez take control of the political fallout from the detainees' escape from Inostranka. Meanwhile, Michael joins the hunt for Thomas while leaving Leila in the keeping of an old friend, Diane Geller.

Full Recap
Chief of Staff Peel briefs Martinez and his general about Thomas' attack on Inostranka and his release of the detainees. When Martinez wonders how it happened, Peel explains that he's a kind man, but weak. The general agrees, advising Martinez to stand up. Martinez finds himself in the Oval Office, with Sophia at his desk. She tells him that she's been forced to take desperate measures, and Martinez realizes that he's handcuffed to a chair. Sophia recites his own words back to him, asking him to trust her. She tells the general to put Martinez out of his misery, and the general draws a gun and hands it to Thomas. Thomas tells Martinez that if he knows what will happen when his people get there, he'd beg Thomas to kill him. A shot rings out...

... and Martinez wakes up from his nightmare.

A motorcade of SUVs arrives at a gated community. The detainees get out and Thomas assures them that they own the homes, and that they'll have much more when the others arrive. After assigning them tasks, Thomas meets with a disfigured sleeper, Hanson, and tells him that his role will be critical.

Martinez meets with his staff, and is surprised to see that Sterling has had himself released early after his injuries. The President is disgusted that they don't have any leads, and asks Simon for answers. However, he then accuses the general of incompetence, and refuses to hear Sterling's excuses that Thomas took a soldier's family hostage. He tells the general to clean house and leaves.

Sophia gets a call from Simon, who tells her that Thomas only took the detainees who swore loyalty to him, and murdered the rest. She tells the agent that they can't grieve, and that they need to find Hanson in San Francesco, where he's laundering money for Thomas' operations. Sophie tells Simon that she'll be there shortly, but has some personal matters to take care of. In the nearby house, Michael is leaving Samantha with his friend, Carlos, and Leila demands answers from her father. He promises to explain later, and then has Carlos dig up a gun from the backyard. Carlos warns that some of the other detainees are considering joining with Thomas, but he isn't one of them. Michael goes to the car and meets with Sophia, who says that they have to dispose of anyone who is working with Thomas.

In San Francisco, Hanson goes to the backroom of a shop and meets with the woman who handles his laundering. As he goes out, he spots Sophia coming across the street. Hanson leaves via the back exit but Michael is waiting for him. They take him to an abandoned office and Michael beats him for information, and Hanson finally admits that Thomas is trying to obtain uranium to power the portal array. He plans to get the uranium from a nuclear power plant in California, and explains that Thomas won't be near the reactor when he takes the uranium.

Sophia calls Martinez, and the general advises him to keep her on the line so they can trace the call. She tells the President that Thomas plans to use a portal to steal nuclear rods, and he'll then use the rods to power the larger array. Sophia warns that Thomas tried portaling nuclear rods from Chernobyl, causing the disaster. She explains that a strong magnetic field will block the portal, and they have to either create such a field at the reactor or move the rods. When Martinez wonders why he should believe her, Sophia merely says that everything she's kept secret has been to protect him and hangs up.

In their new room, Leila tries to find a blanket for Samantha, and quickly hides a photo of Sean. Samantha sees it anyway and asks if she misses Sean, and Leila admits that she does. However, she explains that thinking about him makes her sad.

Sean enters a bar and looks at a photo of Leila. The woman next to him notices and asks if she's his boyfriend, and he hastily puts it away. The woman tells him that he'll find someone else. Her boyfriend Mark comes over and figures she's hitting on Sean. When he tries to pull her away, Sean starts to interfere and Mark shoves him. When Sean tries to walk away, Mark refuses to let him go and continues his attack. Sean finally fights back, beating him until the bartender calls him off.

Sean goes to a house and starts eating the food out of the refrigerator. The owner confronts him, and Sean apologizes for breaking in on his sister. She tells him that the police have been asking after him, but she had nothing to tell them. Sean tries to explain and realizes that his sister is skeptical, and explains that he had to leave Leila. Sean's sister says that she wants to help, but she can't let him get found there because her boyfriend is out on parole. Sean wants Jimmy to set him up with a fake ID so he can get into Mexico. She points out that he's running away and wonders if he wants to stop them.

Sterling goes over the Chernobyl data and warns that a similar incident would cover much of California, rendering the land useless for generation. They have plans to move the rods to Camp Pendleton and protect them with a magnetic field. However, Martinez suggests that they put a tracking device on the rods, led Thomas portal them, and find his base. The rest of the staff disagrees, but Martinez insists that they need to be proactive. When the President wonders if they have anything else to substantiate Sophia's claims, Sterling admits that Maya's sacrifice at Inostranka convinced him that Sophia's people are opposing Thomas'. He insists that they have to trust Sophia rather than risk a nuclear meltdown, and advise Martinez to start moving the rods now. The President is angry that their only option is the one Sophia wants them to pursue, but makes the call to move the rods.

Simon goes to the nuclear plant and tells the supervisor that they need to shut down and move the rods immediately. The supervisor notes that no one can possibly steal the rods, but Simon tells him to start the shut down.

At their office, Michael tells Sophia that he's evacuated all of their people in the area of the nuclear plant. Sophia admits that a lot of their people are waiting to see who emerges triumphant, Sophia or Thomas, and thanks him for his help in getting as far as they have. They get a call from Simon, who updates them on the status of the rods. As they talk, Hanson listens in from the next room. He then pulls a transmitter out of his own flesh and calls Thomas to inform him that Sophia took the bait and the rods are being moved. Thomas tells Hanson to take out Sophia now that she's served her purpose.

Leila overhears Carlos and his wife discussing the merits of choosing between Thomas and Sophia. When Carlos mentions that the native population could be harmed, Leila steps out and demands to know what they're talking about. Carlos says that it's up to Michael to tell her, and they don't trust her because they don't know what her half-blood makes her.

Vicky Roberts is in a grocery store and notices a man watching her. His wife hustles him away, and Vicky continues to the produce section where a man seemingly offers her tips on testing melons. She walks away and the man follows her outside. Vicky grabs him and shoves him to the ground, demanding to know who he works for. The man insists that he was juts returning a receipt that she dropped, and she lets him go. When she arrives home, Vicky notices that a window is open. Sean draws on her and explains that he's not there to kill her unless she forces his hand. He demands to know who she's been working for, and wants her help stopping them.

Michael makes soup for Sophia and warns her that they can't stay there much longer. He checks on Hanson, who appears secure, and then goes outside to make preparations to leave. Once Michael is outside, Hanson shorts out a socket and uses the wire to pick the lock on his handcuffs. He then yanks the wires free to use as a garrote.

Simon is driving in the motorcade escorting the truck with the nuclear rods. An explosion goes off in the road and Thomas' sleepers open fire from the side of the road.

Hanson attacks Sophia and tries to strangle her. She hits him with a coffee pot and tries to run, but Hanson tackles her.

Simon orders the truck driver to get out.

Hanson manages to get the upper hand and throttles her with his bare hands.

Thomas' sleepers kill the driver. Simon gets to the cab and ducks as Thomas orders his men to kill the agent.

Michael arrives in time to kill Hanson with a shotgun.

Thomas' men take the truck and discover that Simon is no longer in the cab. Their leader orders his men to move out with the rods.

Michael makes sure that Sophia is okay, and she finds the transmitter in his ear. She realizes that Thomas has been playing them all along.

Thomas and his men drive off with the rods, while Simon hides beneath a nearby bridge.

After finishing a meeting, Martinez receives word from Sterling that Thomas has hijacked the uranium rods and killed most of their men. Sterling figures that it was planned, and that Thomas planned on them to move the rods. Sophia calls to warn Martinez of what has happened, and he accuses her of tricking him. She insists that Thomas duped her as well, and Martinez demands that she proves her good intentions by turning herself in. She hangs up, but not before Sterling completes the trace. The director tracks her to San Francisco and informs Martinez that the next time she calls, they can pinpoint her signal. Martinez orders men into the field to capture her... and authorizes the use of lethal force.

The Event - Season 1, Episode 12 - Inostranka

The Event - Inostranka
While Thomas appeals to the imprisoned Inostranka detainees to join his cause, Sterling attempts to keep them from escaping. Meanwhile, Martinez deals with a recalcitrant Senator Lewis, and Michael informs Leila that she must choose between Sean, or learning the secrets of her bloodline.

Full Recap
Thomas tells the soldiers to pull the remaining troops off of their posts. Major Pearson insists he won't let Thomas take over the prison, and Thomas has one of his men kill Pearson. He tells Lt. Grier to give the order, who says that he can't do it. However, Thomas knows that he can order a coded lockdown.

Thomas' people capture the remaining soldiers.

Sterling tells Maya that he believes that her people are preparing for invasion, but she insists that it goes against all of their principles. He points out that she murdered his boyfriend on Sophia's orders, and Maya insists she did it to keep William from doing harm. He then shows her the bodies of the airplane passengers and asks what their crime was, and Maya insists that her people didn't do it. Sterling tells her that Thomas did it, and Sophia believes that he's more impatient. Before Maya can respond, Corporal Bell informs Sterling that there's a drill underway and he needs to move to the lockdown in the boiler room. He refuses to interrupt the interrogation and overrides the order.

Outside, Bell calls in and reports that he's been ordered to stay at his post. Thomas realizes that Sterling is there, and has the second-in-command order Bell to stay at his post. Thomas tells his people that he wants Sterling, and demands to know exactly where he is.

Maya insists that she hasn't been in contact with Sophia or Thomas, but Sterling says that the facts tell a different story. She asks what she can do to make him believe her, and he admits it may not be possible. Outside, Bell hears men approaching. He moves forward to investigate and Thomas' men open fire. He manages to retreat and warn Sterling, who demands his sidearm. Sterling has Bell free Maya and then smashes open the interrogation room window so they can escape before the men burst in through the door He then shoots them down and demands to know why they're here. Sterling realizes that they're there to free all of the detainees, and that Thomas is there and wants him dead. As one of the wounded men goes for his gun, Bell shoots the man down as he wounds Sterling. Maya slips away, but Sterling tells Bell not to worry about her. He warns the corporal that they won't be getting out alive, but they have to stop Thomas from leaving with the detainees.

At the White House, Martinez meets with his staff to determine what they've found about the signal. They have nothing to report, and inform Martinez that Buchanan got to one of the guards. Lee reports that he's investigating his escape, but has nothing yet. Martinez is then informed about Senator Lewis. He meets with her in his office, and she insists that he lied to her. She knows it's a secret prison against the Constitution. Martinez warns that the information can only be obtained illegally, but Lewis points out his hypocrisy. He explains that he was outraged at first, but refuses to tell her anything other than that it's a matter of national security. When she questions his integrity, Martinez points out that she's wasn't elected, and suggests that she deal with problems in her own state rather than worry about national security issues. He dismisses her and she angrily leaves.

At the house, Sophia offers tea to Sean and admits that she's heard a lot about him. She thanks him for saving Leila's life, and then explains that her people crashed on Earth 66 years ago. Since then, she has been trying to bring them home in the name of peace. Sean notes that people have been abducted, tortured, and killed, and Sophia admits that her son Thomas has different intentions. He plans to bring more of their people there, and if he does, Sean's world will be destroyed.

Leila accuses Michael of lying to her, and demands to know how old he is and where he's from. Michael admits he's from a distant place, NGC 253. They came to Earth looking for a new home when their home planet could no longer sustain life. He was one of the arrivals who escaped and lived among the population. Michael met Leila's mother and took steps to protect Leila so no one would find out who she really is. When Leila asks who she is, Michael says that she's a part of both him and her mother. When she asks if she's human, Michael admits that she isn't and promises to answer all of her questions in time. However, he needs Leila to come with him but warns that Sean can't come with them and learn more than he already does. When Leila disagrees, Michael says that it's Sophia's orders, and Leila will have to choose between coming with him or staying with Sean.

At Inostranka, Thomas realizes that Sterling has gotten away from his team. He sends another team and tells his people that they have to be out of the prison in 30 minutes before the next shift arrives. Thomas then addresses the detainees, telling them that Sophia has enjoyed her freedom while leaving them to languish in prison. He tells them that he has split from Sophia, and tells them that they don't have to follow her orders if they come with him.

Sterling and Bell make their way to the control room to notify the outside world. They spot a single soldier inside that Bell doesn't recognize, and Sterling slips to the side. When Bell distracts the man, Sterling shoots him down. They find Pearson, dead, and confirm that the outside communications gear is down. Sterling has Bell tend to his wound, and the corporal warns that it's bad. They spot Thomas and his people on the monitors, and Sterling figures that they have to keep them from leaving. When Bell wonders what they can do, Sterling asks if there is a fail-safe to lock down the perimeter. Bell realizes that Sterling has the clearance and brings up the computer systems. However, he warns that they'll be trapped with the intruders. Sterling admits that he knows that, but has no other choice.

Thomas continues to address the detainees, trying to sway them against Sophia. Maya has slipped in with the detainees, while Thomas invites those who believe in Sophia to remain. Most of the detainees side with Thomas, but a few remain to show solidarity with Sophia. Maya tells them that they should bide their time rather than go up against Thomas, but they disregard her advice.

As the detainees head for the exit, Thomas spots Maya and expresses her admiration for making a tough decision. As they get to the outside door, Sterling overrides the systems and initiates the lockdown. Thomas realizes who is responsible and sends his men to capture Sterling so he can open the doors.

Sterling and Bell realize that Thomas' soldiers are closing in. As they head for the armory, they find dead detainees.

Thomas' men spot Sterling's blood trail and move in.

Sterling talks to one of the dying detainees, who confirms that Thomas killed them. The director realizes that the dead detainees are Sophia's people, and that Thomas plans to overthrow Sophia. Thomas' men burst in and demand that Sterling surrender. Outnumbered, he and Bell have no choice but to lay down their guns.

On Hardball With Chris Matthews, Matthews introduces Senator Catherine Lewis. She explains that she will continue to pursue her husband's belief in transparency in government. She announces the Inostranka project. Martinez sees the broadcast and calls MSNBC and Lewis' aide. His chief of staff warns that they can't shut down the broadcast. They reach Senator Lewis and Martinez demands to know what she's doing. Lewis says that she's standing up for his constituents, and demands to know what is going on. She promises to stop talking if Martinez tells her who the Inostranka detainees are. He tells her that her husband knew who they were and why, and he let it go because he knew it was the right thing to do. Lewis doesn't believe him and demands the truth. With ten seconds remaining until she goes back on air, Martinez tells Lewis that he agrees. Lewis then goes back on the air and backs away from describing the Inostranka prison. The Chief of Staff congratulates Martinez, but the President warns that it's a stopgap measure.

Michael tucks Samantha in. Meanwhile, Leila tells Sean about her father's ultimatum. He insists that it doesn't matter to him that she's not human, but Leila points out that he hasn't touched her since he learned the truth. Sean apologizes and takes her hand, and Leila says that she doesn't want to go. However, she has no choice if she wants to get answers about the mystery of her life. He tells her to go, but Leila doesn't know what to do. Sean tells her to go to sleep and they'll figure things out in the morning.

Thomas tells the captive Sterling that he's taking his people out, but Sterling says he knows that Thomas has summoned others and asks when they'll be arriving. In response, Thomas beats him and demands the new codes to the failsafe. When Sterling claims ignorance, Thomas has his men beat the director. Outside, Maya hears them and watches as Sterling insists that he'll never talk. Sterling asks him about the detainees that Thomas had killed, and Thomas prepares to shoot him. Bell finally interrupts and says that he has the code. Thomas frees them and opens the doors, leaves Bell handcuffed outside, and takes Sterling with him. Maya follows with the other detainees, and sits next to Sterling as they board the helicopters. She frees him and tells Sterling to stop Thomas, and that not all of the detainees want what Thomas wants. Maya tells Sterling to run, and he breaks past the guards and heads back toward the base. Thomas shoots him in the hip and Maya runs to his side. As she gets there, Thomas shoots her but is forced to depart before the next shift arrives. Sterling crawls to Maya's side and tells her to hold on, and she tells him with his dying breath to believe her.

The next morning, Leila wakes up realizes that Sean is gone. She looks around the house but finds no sign of her boyfriend.

Sean walks down the road, alone.

Dempsey's aide, the matron, informs him that Leila and Sean freed the test subjects. He goes over to a piece of black stone and confirms Sean's name, and then picks up a smaller piece representing Sean. Dempsey explains that the lines between past, present, and future are starting to blur, and that he and Sean will meet soon.

The Event - And Then There Were More
Martinez and his Chief of Staff order their intelligence departments to determine the nature of Thomas' message and who it was sent to. Meanwhile, Thomas launches a surprise attack, Alaskan Senator Catherine Lewis asks Martinez for information about Inostranka, and Sean and Leila get a fresh lead on Samantha's location.

Full Recap
The alien satellite explodes and pieces plummet back to Earth. Newscaster reports on the unscheduled missile launch but have nothing definite to say. All they do is pass on the government statement that it's a plane crash.

Martinez informs his staff, including his chief of staff Richard Peel, that he's been keeping secrets. He informs them that the extra-terrestrials have a number of sleeper agents among them, and they launched a communication satellite that released a seven-second burst into deep space before self-destructing. All intelligence agencies have been instructed to decrypt the signal. One technician comes up with a breakthrough and reports to Sterling. Sterling informs the president that they have the first line of the message: "Preparations are being made for your arrival."

Martinez meets with Sterling and Peel in the Oval Office. Sterling warns that they should expect an invasion, but Peel isn't convinced. The director warns that superior firepower will eventually win out, and the head of the Armed Forces warns that they have no idea where to strike. Sterling suggests that they interrogate the detainees now that they have a clearer picture of what's going on, and Martinez tells him to go to Inostranka and supervise it personally.

Sophia meets with Simon and warns that they don't know how many of their people Thomas plans on bring over. She tells Simon to go to the portal array, but he warns her that Thomas has kept it secret on the grounds of compartmentalizing the information. Simon suggests that there is one of their own who could help them stop Thomas. Sophia doesn't like it, given what Simon's proposed ally did to them, but Simon warns they don't have any other choice.

In the Himalayan Mountains, Thomas and Isabel meet with Gerard, one of their own. They show him the power module, and Gerard warns that he'll need more staff to make their plan a reality. Thomas assures him that they have a plan that will get more of their people. Gerard then takes them to see the portal array: a huge metallic superstructure almost a mile in diameter. Thomas is confident it is large enough to bring every last one of their people there.

At the Willowbrook Hospital in Missouri, Sean and Leila go through the charred files and Sean finds the file with Michael Buchanan's name on it. It shows that he has been around for decades, unaging, and Sean wonders if Michael is one of them. Leila insists that there isn't any "them" and the photos are fakes. She wants to talk to her dad and find Samantha, and begins searching desperately through the remaining papers. Sean hears a noise outside the room and they go to investigate. They spot the matron, who flees up the stairs. Sean easily captures her and draws a gun on her, and demands answers. Leila examines her briefcase and finds vials of liquid. The matron tells them that all of the test subjects have been moved, and that they take Samantha and the other girls because they're special. She says that Leila is special because of her father, who doesn't age at a normal rate. Leila demands to know where Samantha is, and Sam threatens to shoot her. The matron explains that Samantha is being sent to a facility at West Plains with other girls, and left in a white van ten minutes ago.

Leila and Sean leave the matron behind and drive toward West Plains. She asks him if he believes what the matron said about Michael, and Sean notes that everything they've heard has been proven true despite how strange they sound. Leila says that she knows.

At the CDC facility, Michael is transferred to a supermax facility in Virginia. En route, a car crashes into the transport van and masked men quickly subdue the soldiers and free Michael. They throw him into the van and one of them removes their mask. Michael realizes that it's Simon.

Peel informs Martinez that the news story on the missile has been covered up, Sterling is en route to Inostranka, and Martinez is to meet with Senator Catherine Lewis of Alaska, who has taken over her dead husband Bernard's seat. Martinez meets with her and Lewis explains about the bill she's supporting on fiscal responsibility. He agrees with her and promises his support, and Lewis insists that she wants transparency in government. Lewis then explains that she's found a file in her husband's briefcase about a weather station at Inostranka. It has financing information on the "weather station," but she was told it was never built. Martinez hastily lies that the project never came to fruition, and promises to get her information on it. Once she leaves, Lewis confirms with her aide, Eric Watkins, that he kept a copy of the file and that she believes that Martinez was bluffing.

Simon brings Michael to Sophia, and Michael asks for her forgiveness for flying the plane. He explains that he didn't know she would be there at the Presidential compound, but admits that he would have gone through with it anyway because their enemies had his daughters. Sophia points out that he wasn't supposed to have daughters, and snaps at him for spending time building a family while she sat in prison for decades. She then confirms that Michael helped Thomas transport the portal components via a middleman, and wants the identity of the middleman so they can find Thomas. Michael agrees to help, but first asks her to help him locate Leila and Samantha. He figures the government knows something, but Simon says that all they know is that Sean has surfaced from time to time. He starts to offer his help, but Sophia says that Michael will obey her. Michael refuses to back down and tells her that his help is conditional on her help finding his daughters.

In the white van, Samantha and the other aged girls wait to arrive at their destination. Behind them, Sean and Leila catch up and close in on the vehicle. Sean passes the van and confirms that the driver is alone, and then pulls ahead. The van driver tries to ram them off the road, and Sean brakes. The van goes off the road and slams into some rocks. Sean and Leila approach the van and Sean knocks out the driver and gets the keys. They free Sam and the other girls, and Sean and Leila get Sam out and tell a passing driver to call for help for the other girls. When their car won't start back up, Sean and Leila flee into the woods with Sam.

At a bar in Alaska, Isabel buys a drink for a soldier, Lieutenant Grier, and he joins her. As they leave, he asks about her leg and she claims it was hurt in a skiing accident. Thomas grabs Grier and tells him that his family is hostage, and they want him to help raise an army.

Samantha finally tires out, and asks why they're running from the police. Leila explains that they want her to be safe. Collier calls Sean and tells him that she's sending Federal agents to lock down the scene. She also informs Sean that someone called for Michael and wants to set up a meeting. Sean figures that it's a trap, but Michael sent a message to confirm the truth: that he knows Sean was going to propose to Leila on the cruise. Collier texts him the number and Sean tells Leila about the proposed meeting.

In Washington, Lewis arrives at her office and finds Niles Duncan, the sergeant at arms, securing her husband's office. He explains that he's been ordered by the President to confirm that the files don't contain any classified information. Lewis claims that there are letters in her husband's death that were sent to him by another woman, and asks to retrieve them in return for owing him. Niles agrees and clears his men out. Once she's alone, Lewis pulls the files on Inostranka.

At Inostranka, Major Pearson greets Sterling, who says that he plans to interrogate the detainees and that Pearson doesn't have the clearance to receive further information. Meanwhile, Grier is working in the command center.

Sean, Leila, and Sam wait to meet with Michael. Leila asks Sean what it means if Michael is one of the aliens, and what it makes her. Sean assures her that everything will be all right. Michael arrives and Leila and Sam run to hug him. Simon is with Michael and thanks Sean for what he's done. Leila backs away from Michael and says that Madeline told them about the aliens, and that they found the photos of Michael. She asks her father if it's true, and he admits it is as he hugs her and apologizes.

At Inostranka, Thomas and his troops cut their way through the perimeter fence. The soldiers easily get inside and take out the guards. They then let in the rest of Thomas' men.

Corporal Bell escorts Sterling to see a detainee, who explains that the interrogation subject murdered a suspect on Sophia's orders and he wants to know why. He enters the room and greets Maya, and tells her that they've deciphered the message from the satellite. Maya says that invasion would violate the precepts of her people, and that they swore an oath to protect humanity. She explains that they vowed to leave Earth's civilization intact, and Sterling asks her what the message means.

Thomas' men drive in and claim they're on a supply run from Fort Greely. The guards call Grier to confirm the supply run, and he tells them to permit entry. Grier then inserts a flash drive into the computer and blanks out the security monitors. Pearson comes in and notes that Grier is looking ill, and the lieutenant quickly makes an excuse.

Once inside, Thomas' soldiers gas the soldiers on duty. As they spread out, Thomas tells them to keep quiet until they secure the facility.

In the command center, Pearson notices a clock on the monitor that doesn't show the correct tape. He checks the other monitors and realizes they're on a loop. Grier draws a gun on him before Pearson can give the alert. Thomas storms in and says he wants the prison and everyone in it.
